Introduction
What is FamZoo?
FamZoo.com is a virtual family bank that helps insanely busy parents (that’d be you!) to teach their kids good money habits with minimal hassle through hands-on practice.
Here’s a brief intro video:
What is a virtual family bank?
A virtual family bank is a private online family “banking” system designed to help you teach your kids to earn, save, spend, and give money wisely. You are the “banker,” and your kids are the “customers.”
You can manage your kids’ funds in either IOU accounts, or prepaid card accounts (subject to eligibility), or a combination of the two. Your kids sign in separately to access their own accounts, while you maintain visibility and control through a shared online dashboard.
You define the rules of your private family banking system and economy in a way that matches your unique values. You can set up any combination of automated allowances, rewards for chores and odd jobs, “payroll” withholding for saving or giving, penalties for missed work, parent-paid interest on savings, expense sharing, matching contributions, budgets, loans, and much more.
Start super simple, and add sophistication gradually as your kids mature.
What are IOU accounts?
IOU accounts simply track money you’re holding elsewhere on behalf of your child. The current balance in an IOU account is the amount that you currently “owe” your child. When FamZoo makes automated payments from you to your child for allowance, rewards, interest, etc, it credits your child’s IOU account. Conversely, when FamZoo makes automated payments from your child to you for penalties or shared expenses, it deducts from your child’s IOU account. When you make a purchase or donation on your child’s behalf or hand over cash, you deduct the amount from your child’s IOU account to reflect the transaction.
IOU accounts are handy for:
- Kids who are not ready for cards yet.
- Tracking funds held outside FamZoo.
- Tracking chore rewards for review before actual payment.
- Tracking family loans.
Looking for accounts that hold real money instead? See our prepaid card accounts.
For more information on how IOU accounts work, see here. Also see: What’s the Difference Between Prepaid Card Accounts and IOU Accounts?
What are prepaid card accounts?
Unlike IOU accounts, FamZoo’s prepaid card accounts set real money aside for your child, provide a safe payment mechanism for your child with no risk of debt, and automatically capture purchases, donations, and other external transactions. Prepaid card accounts are subject to eligibility requirements and may not be available if you’re receiving our service through one of our partners who has chosen not to offer them.
For more information on how prepaid card accounts work, watch this video and see here. Also see: What’s the Difference Between Prepaid Card Accounts and IOU Accounts?
Getting Started
How do I register my family?
If you’d like to receive our service directly from FamZoo.com, register here. If you’re intending to receive our service via one of our partners, like a financial institution, please return to their site and register from a registration link on their FamZoo offer page. That way, you’ll receive all the special benefits intended by our partner.
Why can’t I sign in on my browser? Clicking Sign In does nothing.
We’ve seen this happen occasionally on new updates to browsers like Firefox and Edge. Try clearing your browser’s cookie data. If that doesn’t eliminate the problem, please contact us.
How do I set up my virtual family bank?
If you’re using our prepaid card accounts with your family, follow the instructions here.
Otherwise, to set up your virtual family bank using IOU accounts, all you have to do is follow the blue help bubbles that appear on your screen after you’ve registered your family. You can see what it looks like in this video. It walks you through registration, adding your family members, and setting up your IOU accounts:
Do you have some examples of clever family bank setups?
Yes, we have several blog posts describing family bank setups that demonstrate a variety of clever allowance, chore, and incentive systems:
- The Bank of Emah — A modest spend, save, give allowance with delivery based on meeting basic expectations; the opportunity to earn more money from extra chores; generous weekly compound interest on savings; goals for purchases and donations; and penalties for being “unhelpful”.
- The Bank of Helbig — expected weekly and daily chores; penalties for certain hot-button infractions; a weekly allowance split between spending and saving; the ability to choose how much is kept and how much is saved each week; and aggressive matching incentives to encourage saving.
- The Bank of Boogie — a weekly allowance split between spending, saving, giving, and a family tax; generous compound monthly savings interest; penalties for “problematic” household behavior; and a monthly shared billing charge.
- The Bank of Fisher — separate buckets for everyday spending, saving for large purchases, long term saving, and charitable giving; a separate lunch allowance that can be kept if the kids make their lunches; and a “light touch chore system” with regular, ultra and super bonus opportunities.
- The Bank of Rogers — an allowance split between spending, saving, giving, and paying back a loan for a school band trip; odd job opportunities to make extra cash; and a custom split for babysitting income deposits.
- Mike’s Bank of Mom & Dad — accounts that model checking, savings, and a Certificate of Deposit investment; kid-driven decisions each week on how to split between accounts; cash withdrawals for pocket money; and generous monthly interest on savings.
Can I give FamZoo as a gift to another family?
You can pay the monthly fees for another family in advance with a gift subscription. When the other family redeems the gift code during registration, they’ll be credited for the free months that you purchased.
Click here to order a gift subscription.
For some examples of how to present your gift subscription along with printable gift certificates, see here.
If you’d like to bulk order gift subscriptions at a discount for a group of friends, colleagues, or clients, please contact us. We even offer a co-branded version of the FamZoo app(lication) for your company or organization.
Pricing and Billing
How much does FamZoo cost?
When you register directly on FamZoo.com, we offer the following standard pricing and billing options for your family’s FamZoo subscription:
- Monthly — your family pays a $5.99 recurring fee that is automatically billed each month. You can cancel anytime to terminate the monthly billings.
- Pay-in-advance — your family makes a one-time payment for a block of months up front at a discount. The more months, the bigger the discount. The options are as follows:
YOU PAY WHICH EQUALS WHY PRE-PAY? $25.99
for 6 months$4.33
per monthYou save $9.95 or 27% $39.99
for 12 months$3.33
per monthYou save $31.89 or 44% $59.99
for 24 months$2.50
per monthYou save $83.77 or 58% Unlike the monthly plan, the pay-in-advance plan does not automatically renew — we send you an email just before your term is up so you can select a new payment plan when you manually renew.
All subscription pricing above covers your whole family and is the same whether your family uses IOU accounts, prepaid card accounts, or a mixture of the two.
If you order our prepaid cards, you may incur additional fees in certain cases such as ordering more than 4 cards, expediting card delivery, or ordering more than 3 replacement cards. For our comprehensive CFPB prepaid card fee disclosure statements, see here.
Do you store my credit card info?
Nope. We do not store any of your sensitive payment information on FamZoo servers. Your sensitive payment information is all handled and managed securely by Paypal.

Getting Help
I can’t find the answer I need in your FAQs. Help!
If you’re using our prepaid card accounts, be sure to check out the entries in our prepaid card FAQ as well.
If you have a question about how to do something in the FamZoo desktop browser application, try the pop-up help. Sign into FamZoo, visit a page the looks related to your question (like Bank ⟩ Accounts), and click on the How Do I...? link in the left hand sidebar (for pages that have a left hand sidebar). You’ll see a list of the things you can do from that page. When you select an item from the list, you’ll see a pop-up bubble explaining the action and where you should click on the FamZoo page to make it happen.
If the pop-up help doesn’t do the trick for your question, please contact us in any of the following ways:
- Sign in to FamZoo web application, and click on the Contact Us in the upper right corner of the page.
- Sign in to FamZoo on a mobile device, and tap on the Contact Us entry in the menu at the top right corner of the Accounts screen.
- Not signed in or can’t sign in? Click here: Contact Us
- Call 1-412-FAMZOO1 (1-412-326-9661). If we don’t pick up right away, please leave a message describing your question. Don’t forget to include your callback number and the best time to reach you. We’ll call you as soon as we can. Note that we are on Pacific time in the United States.
- If you have a FamZoo prepaid card, call the 800 number printed on the back of the card.

I forgot my (or my kid’s) password. Can you send it to me?
Nope! We actually don’t know your (or your kid’s) password. That’s because, for security purposes, we store passwords in such a way that we (or any bad guys out there) can’t read them. All we can tell is whether or not you supply the right password when signing in. It’s magical nerd encryption stuff.
You can, however, initiate an automated reset of your own password by visiting the FamZoo sign-in page and clicking on the I Forgot My Password link. (Note: this isn’t currently available from the mobile sign-in screen.) You’ll be asked to supply your email address, and FamZoo will send you instructions for completing the password reset. If you don’t happen to have an email address registered with us or if you have the same email address for multiple family members, you’ll be asked to contact customer service for assistance with completing the reset.
As a parent, you can reset the password for any one of your kids at any time by following the instructions for editing family member settings.
How do I change family level settings like our family sign-in name?

How do I add a new virtual bank account?
If you’re using our prepaid card accounts and want to add more cards, follow the instructions here. Otherwise, to create an additional IOU account after you’ve been through the initial setup, follow these steps:
- Sign in as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Accounts menu item.
- Select Create IOU Account in the left hand sidebar.
- Choose the family member for whom you’d like to create the new account.
- Fill in fields of the Create IOU Account form as desired and submit it when finished.
You can watch the steps in this video.
How do I edit the settings of a virtual bank account?
To edit the settings (name, description, etc.) of a virtual bank account in your family, follow these steps:
- Sign in as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Accounts menu item.
- Hover your mouse over the account you’d like to edit and select the gear icon. Alternatively, select Account Settings in the left-hand sidebar and choose the desired account from the drop-down list.
- Update the desired fields in the Edit Account form, and submit it when finished.
How do I split a deposit between accounts?
To split a one-off deposit between virtual bank accounts, follow these steps:
- Click on the Split Credit link on the Overview or Accounts page.
- Fill in the amount.
- Fill in the desired split percentages or select one of your existing allowance or split definitions.
See more detailed instructions with screenshots here.
Can I let my child enter and edit transactions?
Yes, if it is an IOU account. It’s particularly handy when teaching your child how to track expenses. To allow your child to enter, edit, and delete transactions on an IOU account, edit its settings and check the box in the Child Permissions section.
How can I hide an account from normal view?
To make an account disappear from the typical screens in the user interface, edit the account’s settings and check the box in the Account Visibility section.
To view any hidden accounts, click on Goto Hidden Accounts at the bottom on the Accounts listing page under the Bank ⟩ Accounts tab in the desktop UI.
To learn more about hiding accounts, locating hidden accounts, and un-hiding them, see the post here.
How can I delete a virtual bank account?
If you want to delete a prepaid card account, you can’t. That’s because it provides a formal record of the card’s actual financial transactions. However, you can hide it from view so it no longer appears in most of the application screens.
If you want to delete an IOU account, you can:
- Sign in as the parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Accounts menu item.
- Hover your mouse over the account you’d like to delete and select the trash can icon. Alternatively, select Delete IOU Account in the left-hand sidebar and choose the desired account from the drop-down list.
Warning: deleting an IOU account will irreversibly delete the account and it’s complete transaction history. If you think you’ll ever want to revisit this account’s history in the future, you’ll want to just hide it instead.
Can I print out a bank statement?
We do not have formal printed statements for FamZoo accounts at the moment, but we do mail out a summary of transactions to family members with a registered email address each week (see example here). Some parents like to print these out and use them as “bank statements” to review with their kids each week. If a young child does not have an email address, you can set the child’s email address to your own so you’ll receive the child’s statement instead.
How do I download the transaction data from an account?
We don’t have a fully supported way to download transaction data from an IOU or prepaid card account just yet, but we do have this “top-secret” trick while we work on something more elegant:
- Sign in as the parent using a non-mobile browser.
- From the Overview Page, go up to the address bar on your browser, and change the second number in the URL from a 5 to a 17 to bring up the “secret” Download Transactions page.
- Pick the account and (optionally) a date range. Click Go.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Download Spreadsheet to get your data as a CSV file.
To see the steps in action and some tips on what you can do with the data in a spreadsheet, see the Quick Tip video here.
Tip: Conduct a non-judgmental spending audit with your teen.
How do I change the currency for our IOU accounts?
Currency is a family level setting that affects all of the IOU accounts in your family. It can be changed by following the instructions here. Don’t see the currency you need? Contact us and we’ll see if we can add it.
Parent-Paid Interest
How do I set up parent-paid interest to encourage saving?
To encourage your child to save, you can pay compound interest on the current balance of your child’s account each week, month, or year. Once you set it up, FamZoo will automatically calculate and deliver the amounts for you each period. Follow these steps:
- Edit your child’s account.
- Look for the Interest section, and fill in the interest rate, the compounding frequency, and the desired start date.
- To see what kind of damage you might be in for, select Calculate Interest and play around with the settings to project what future interest payments might look like.
Tip: Motivate your kid to save in a way that traditional savings accounts can’t.
Tip: Offer parent-paid interest for spending, giving, and even (not) spending.
Tip: Set the stage for socking away savings in college.
Tip: Run your own teen card program that rewards less spending.
Tip: Play the Sweep-To-Savings game with your teen.
Tip: Offer kids a savings match with strings attached.
My kid’s making too much in interest. Can I cap the amount?
If you’re paying a crazy-awesome interest rate and your child starts saving like mad, your parent-paid interest amounts might get out of hand. To make sure they never exceed a maximum amount, follow these steps:
- Edit your child’s account.
- Look for the Interest section, and fill in the “not to exceed” field. Leaving it blank means there is no maximum.
Watch this video to learn about interest caps in more detail.
Parent-Paid Investment Account
How do I set up a parent-paid investment account to encourage investing?
We don’t have a fully automated solution here just yet, but if you (or your child) are willing to do a little work each week or month, here’s how you can teach some basic investing principles using a separate IOU or prepaid account whose balance mirrors the movement of a mock investment.
- Add a new IOU account or order an extra card to represent your child’s investment.
- Choose the investment — maybe an individual stock or an index fund — that your child will “purchase” and track in the account.
- Decide how much of the investment your child will “purchase” and transfer that amount into the account from one of your child’s other FamZoo accounts — typically a spending or savings account.
- Calculate the number of shares “purchased” by dividing the initial investment amount by the current share price. So, if your child “bought” $10 of Apple stock at a share price of $102.25, the number of shares would be $10 divided by $102.25 equals 0.098 shares. (Tip: edit the account settings and record the number of shares purchased in the description.)
- Each week (or month or whenever):
- Calculate the current value of the investment by multiplying the number of shares “purchased” by the current share price.
- If the investment went up, credit your child’s account by the amount necessary to make the current balance rise to the current value of the investment. You’re paying your child the investment gains since last time.
- If the investment went down, debit your child’s account by the amount necessary to make the current balance fall to the current value of the investment. Your child is paying you for the investment losses since last time.
- Optional: if you are using an IOU account and you want your child to enter the regular credits or debits, be sure to enable the child permissions on the account.
- Optional: set up a repeating checklist item called “Update investment account” with a reminder to help stay on track.
- To see how the end-of-month account value is trending over time, click on the Balance History viewing link in the Bank tab.
- When your child is ready to “sell” the investment, transfer the current balance out of the account into one (or more) of your child’s other accounts.
What is the difference between an allowance and a split?
A split defines how an amount will be divided percentage-wise between your child’s virtual bank accounts. It’s a named list of percentage/account pairs, and the percentages must add up to 100%. For example, a split might indicate that a payment should be divided such that 60% goes to a spending account, 20% goes to a savings account, and 20% goes to a charitable giving account. A split does not define how much a payment is or how often it occurs. Splits are handy for use with split deposits and split chore chart payments.
An allowance combines a split definition with payment information: how much should be paid, how often the payment should occur, and when payments should start. The payment amount can be a formula based on your child’s age, or a fixed amount, or a combination.
Tip: Let your kid choose the spend-save-give allocation.
Tip: Nudge your kid’s charitable impulses with this giving data from other kids.
How do I add a new allowance or split?
To add a new allowance or split, follow these steps:
- Sign in as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Allowances/Splits menu item to get to the Allowances and Splits listing page.
- Select Create Allowance or Create Split in the left hand sidebar.
- Choose the family member for whom you’d like to create the new allowance or split.
- Fill in fields of the form as desired, and submit it when finished.
Tip: 6 traits of a well-designed allowance.
How do I edit the settings of an allowance or split?
To edit the settings (name, percentages, delivery schedule, etc.) of an allowance or split in your family, follow these steps:
- Sign in as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Allowances/Splits menu item to get to the Allowances and Splits listing page.
- Hover your mouse over the allowance or split you’d like to edit and click on the gear icon. Alternatively, select Allowance Settings or Split Settings in the left hand sidebar and pick the desired allowance or split from the drop-down list.
- Update the desired fields in the form, and submit it when finished.
How can I schedule a semimonthly allowance?
To deliver allowance semimonthly much like a typical paycheck, you can create two monthly allowances. For example, Allowance 1 that hits on the first of each month, and Allowance 2 that hits on the 15th.
How do I delete an allowance or split?
To delete an allowance or split in your family, follow these steps:
- Sign in as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Allowances/Splits menu item to get to the Allowances and Splits listing page.
- Hover your mouse over the allowance or split you’d like to delete and click on the trash can icon. Alternatively, select Delete Allowance or Delete Split in the left hand sidebar and pick the desired allowance or split from the drop-down list.
How can I put an allowance on hold while we’re on vacation?
To skip one or more upcoming allowance deliveries while you’re away on vacation (or for any other reason), edit the allowance and update its start date to a day in the future when you’d like it to resume.
Chore Charts and Checklists
How do I create an online chore chart?
To create an online chore chart with optional monetary rewards for completing tasks or even (gasp!) penalties for blowing them off, follow these steps:
- Select the Checklists ⟩ Current Lists menu item if you are in the Desktop UI, or tap on the Checklists button at the bottom of the screen on mobile.
- Select the Create New List link to start creating your chore chart.
- Fill in the form with the list name and other desired settings. Be sure to check the Rewards and Penalties box if desired. Save the form.
- Select the Add Item link to add each task to your chore chart. Be sure to supply a specific start date if you have a repeating item. Doing so will reveal additional options relevant to repeating items.
Important: In almost all cases, repeating items should have an Expires setting of a specific number of days. Otherwise, your lists can become very cluttered in the All Open view.
For detailed instructions and tips plus screenshots, read the post here.
How do I set up a “chore fail” chart?
Sometimes it’s just easier to give your kids a regular allowance and (hopefully only occasionally) claw back some money when they fail to do certain chores. Read more about the approach here. Just follow the instructions for creating a regular chore chart, but reverse the descriptions (“Did not make bed”) and change the rewards to penalties.
What’s the best way to set up chore charts for multiple kids?
When setting up chore charts for multiple kids, there are two popular strategies:
- Set up on consolidated chore checklist owned by the parent and shared with the family. Enter items for each child and include the name of the responsible child in each item description as outlined in this post. This approach works best when you prefer to see all the chores in one place at a glance.
- Create a separate list owned by each child and shared with the parents. This approach works best when you want your kids to see only their own chores.
How do I create a “first dibs” chore chart where the first kid to complete the chore gets paid?
If you have more than one child, you may want to set up a list of extra chores or odd jobs that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Instructions for setting up such a “first dibs” chore chart can be found here.
How do I split a chore payment between accounts?
You can use an existing allowance or split definition when setting up chore rewards and penalties to divvy up payments percentage-wise between accounts. See detailed instructions with screenshots here.
How do I withhold chore payment until after parental review?
Chore rewards are delivered to the associated account(s) as soon as they are checked off. When a child has access to the checklist and the rewards are linked directly to a prepaid card account, that can be problematic. Especially if the child spends some ill-gotten rewards before you can intervene. You can use an intermediate Chore Earnings IOU account to delay the delivery of chore funds until after parental review on payday. See how to set up the system here.
Can I make a points-based non-monetary reward system?
Yes, to see how you can use FamZoo IOU accounts and checklists to create a non-monetary reward system (staying up an extra hour on a non-school night, getting an extra hour of computer time, having a sleepover with friends, etc.), check out this post.
How do I make a shared wish list for gift ideas?
You can use a checklist to communicate your gift wishes for upcoming birthdays and holidays. Other family members can be automatically notified whenever you add items to your list. For detailed instructions with screenshots, check out this post.
What are the different ways I can view checklist items?
Checklist items can be displayed in one of 4 modes:
- all items due today,
- all items due this week,
- all open items (i.e., not checked off and not expired), and
- all closed items (i.e., checked off or expired).
You can read more about the modes (including how many upcoming items are shown in All Open mode) here.
When do upcoming items appear on my chore chart or checklist?
When you’re viewing your chart or checklist in the “All Open” view, the rules are a bit subtle about how many future repeating items we show at any given moment. We try to show just the upcoming open items that are within an “appropriate” time horizon. You can read about the specific rules here.
How can I be alerted when something happens on my checklist?
You can set up email or text alerts that are sent to yourself and other family members whenever an item is added, becomes overdue, is checked off, or expires on your checklist. To set up checklist alerts:
- Visit the Checklist tab and go to the desired checklist.
- Click on the Alerts link in the left-hand sidebar.
- Add, remove, or modify the alerts of the desired type.
- Click on the Save button.
Oops, didn’t mean to check that item off! How do we undo?
Suppose you or your child checks off a checklist item, but then you decide it shouldn’t have been. Maybe it was just an accident, or maybe a chore was not completed to your satisfaction. Either way, you can just click on the check box next to the item again, and it will return to the unchecked state. This will also automatically undo any reward or penalty transactions that were created when the item was checked off. To undo a reward/penalty transaction for an IOU account, FamZoo simply deletes it. To undo a reward/penalty transaction for a prepaid card account, FamZoo creates a new transaction that compensates for the original one. That’s because FamZoo can’t change history for a prepaid card account — it’s part of a permanent record.
How do I change the order of items on my checklist?
To reorder the items on your checklist:
- Visit the Checklist tab and go to the desired checklist.
- Click on the Reorder Items link.
- Click on the up and down arrows to re-position items relative to one another.
- Click on the Done Reordering button to return to the normal checklist view.
To see how reordering items works in the mobile screens, see here.
How do I change the starting day for the week?
The starting day of the week for checklists displayed in the Due This Week view is Monday by default. You can change it to Sunday by following the instructions here.
Can I prevent my kid from changing checklist items?
Currently, whenever you share a checklist, the participating family members can edit, delete, and check off any of the items on it. The one restriction is that kids can never update reward and penalty settings. In the future (sorry, not sure when), we may add controls to help you protect your shared checklist items from various operations by others.
In the meantime, if you’re trying to prevent your kids from monkeying around with their chore charts, we recommend you sit them down and have “the talk.” Let them know your weekly FamZoo bank statements list all of the rewards and penalties issued during the period, and there will be consequences for any chore chart shenanigans! We find that the risk of getting busted and a suitably unpleasant consequence generally does the trick. We’re big on the “trust but verify” paradigm here at FamZoo.
To help you monitor shenanigans in real-time, you can set up alerts to notify you whenever the kids check off items on the chart. See here.
If you need to reverse an item that has been inadvertently or inappropriately checked off, see here.
If you’d like to withhold chore payment until after parental review, see here.
Automatic Debits
How do I set up an automatic recurring charge to an account?
To automatically charge an account for a portion of a recurring family expense (like a cell phone plan), follow these steps:
- Sign into FamZoo as a parent.
- If you’re on a mobile device, switch into the Desktop UI by following the instructions here.
- Select the Bank ⟩ Automatic Debits menu item.
- Select Create Autodebit in the left-hand sidebar and choose the family member to be billed from the drop down list.
- Fill in the fields and be sure to select the account to be charged in the drop down list.
- Click the Create Autodebit button.
Savings Goals
How do I create a savings goal?
To create a savings goal to track progress in an account:
- Click on the Bank tab.
- Click on the Savings Goals link.
- Click on the Create action link.
Budgets
How do I create a budget?
You and your kids can create very simple budget worksheets in FamZoo under Bank ⟩ Budgets in the Desktop UI and share them with other family members. The step-by-step instructions are here.
Tip: How to set a clothing budget with your teen.
Tip: Involve your child in holiday gift giving with a budget.
Loans
How do I track a loan repayment from my child?
You can use IOU accounts and a goals to manage and track the repayment of informal loans to your kids. For the step-by-step instructions, see this post.
Weekly Account Reports
Can I change the delivery day used for the weekly account summary reports?
By default, the weekly account summaries for your family are delivered on the same day of the week that your family originally registered for FamZoo. To change the report day, just contact us and let us know which day of the week you’d prefer.
Can I turn off the weekly account summary report?
If you would like to turn off the delivery of weekly account reports to some or all of your family members, just contact us and we’ll take care of it.
Mobile Access
Is there a FamZoo app for my iPhone or iOS device?
Yep.
You can download our app for your iPhone or other iOS device from here on iTunes.
Or, you can simply access the FamZoo mobile screens using your favorite mobile browser.
You can find more info about our app here.
Is there a FamZoo app for my Android phone?
Yep.
You can download our app for your Android phone from here on the Google Play Store.
Or, you can simply access the FamZoo mobile screens using your favorite mobile browser.
You can find more info about our app here.
Can I access mobile FamZoo from any smartphone?
Yep.
We have built mobile optimized screens that you’ll automatically see when you sign into FamZoo on your smartphone via your favorite mobile browser. Just:
- Open up your mobile browser.
- Visit FamZoo.com.
- Tap on the sign in link.
You’ll want to add a shortcut icon for the Accounts page to your home screen so you can launch mobile FamZoo with a single tap. This article shows how to do that for a variety of popular mobile devices.
Can I access FamZoo using text messages?
Yes, if you have a text enabled phone in the United States, you can access FamZoo by sending it one of our quirky “Quick Commands.” You can find a cheat sheet of our Quick Commands here. You can even try them out using your browser by signing into your FamZoo account and visiting the Mobile tab.
How do I get to the FamZoo “desktop UI” web application pages from my mobile device?
When you use FamZoo from your mobile device, you’ll automatically see our compact mobile-optimized screens or “mobile UI” as we say in nerd-speak. Some infrequent FamZoo operations are unavailable in our mobile UI. We do, however, have a “secret” back door for viewing our full-sized (aka “desktop UI”) screens from our your mobile device, so you can access those operations in a pinch (and zoom).
Just select the Desktop UI entry in the mobile menu at the top right of the screen. You’ll be taken to the same full-sized screens you see on your desktop or laptop browser.
IMPORTANT: To get back to the mobile-optimized screens, swipe to the upper right of the page, and tap on the Mobile UI link.
Do I need a mobile phone to use FamZoo?
No. You can access FamZoo on any device — desktop, laptop, or mobile — using any modern browser.
Referral Program
Can I get paid for referring new families to FamZoo?
Yes, indeed! The simplest way to get paid for referrals is to have a bonus credited right to your FamZoo primary funding card whenever a new family registers (and ultimately subscribes) using your special FamZoo referral link. To learn how the FamZoo referral program works, see here.
If you’re serious about referring a significant volume of families to FamZoo — perhaps through your personal finance blog or some other online business — you’ll want to check out our affiliate program instead. It takes a little more effort to sign up, but it’s free to participate and the program offers a more long term revenue sharing opportunity.

Does FamZoo have an API? I'd like to programmatically transfer funds and pass/fail chores. I'd also like to sync the transaction data to dropbox.
Hi Craig, apologies but we don't have an API available yet and, while it's something we'd like to provide, unfortunately I don't have an expected date. You may be able to pull of some basic automation with our Quick Commands: http://www.famzoo.com/quickcmdref.pdf
And, here's what we currently have for manually exporting transactions: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-faqs.html#download-transactions.
How would kids cash in the amount on their cards for cash or transfer the cash in the virutal account to an actual savings account?
To get cash from a card, kids can:
1) make a withdrawal from an ATM (use one in our free nationwide network to avoid any fees)
2) get cash back from an in-store PIN based purchase (if the merchant offers that option)
3) get cash from a parent and have the parent debit the FamZoo card account accordingly. That causes the "withdrawn" amount to flow back to the family's primary funding card so the parent is being paid back for the cash withdrawal from the ATM of Mom/Dad.
All of our cards have their own account and routing number combo which makes the card look like a checking account to the outside financial world. So, a card can be linked to a financial institution as an external checking account. Once linked, you can transfer funds from your card into a savings or investment account at the institution.
If by virtual account you mean an IOU account, then that account merely tracks an amount the parent owes the child. If you want to "move" the IOU to an actual savings account, then transfer the desired amount from one of your own accounts into the child's actual savings account and debit the IOU account by the same amount.
im interested in this for my 11 and 13 year old... but how does the 13 year old use the debit card at retailers (if his name is the primary cardholder)? do they have to get an ID card or something?
Interesting: we've never had that question or issue raised. I suspect that a school photo ID (common in middle and high school) would suffice. That said, in over 3 years of offering our cards, we've never had a customer mention having a problem with their teen's card being rejected by an in-store merchant for identification reasons. I suppose it could be an issue, but we have not seen it yet.
Can friends or family members put money in the primary or secondary accounts?
If the sending party knows the account/routing numbers for the recipient's FamZoo card (see http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#routing-account-nums), they can use a service like PopMoney to move money directly to the recipient. See http://blog.famzoo.com/2016/01/popmoney-load-prepaid-card-from-checking-account.html
Hi, wondering if it's possible to copy a checklist in its entirety to assign to a different child. (i.e.; Child 1 and Child 2 are both expected to tidy their bedrooms and take showers on Sunday. I don't want Child 2 to do both items, check them off, then have it look to Child 1 that they are off the hook for both since they've been checked off if the kids share a checklist. However, creating separate checklists with many entries on each is time consuming... Is there a way to click a button to completely copy (and then rename) a checklist? Thanks!
Apologies, but we don't have a "clone a list" capability yet, so the initial setting up the additional lists can be a bit tedious. Hopefully the lists contain largely stable repeating items so it isn't too much maintenance after the setup phase. You may also want to turn on alerts (http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-faqs.html#checklist-alerts) to catch any check-off shenanigans in real-time.
Hi. Can you control which account the allowance or split is paid from, or is it always paid from the "master" FamZoo account? Both Mom and Dad would like to participate in paying allowances. Thanks!
With the exception of explicit account to account transfers, the amounts generally come from the one primary funding card in the family.
Please see the post "How To Deliver Allowance And Chore Payments From Multiple Parents" http://blog.famzoo.com/2017/06/allowance-chores-multiple-parents.html for some ideas that may be helpful.
When will you have an Android app? It's 2018...
2018
Can my 16 year old sign up for direct deposit to his card if he has a job?
Will the card work with apple pay?
FamZoo? Are you aware of last week’s post to this blog? Thinking it’s not what our kids should be reading if they’re on here trying to figure something out. Especially those of us with teens.
Jo Anna: Yes, teens can have paychecks directly deposited to their cards. Mine did for their summer and part-time jobs. Worked out great.
Re Apple Pay: At the moment, our card processor does not support Apple Pay. As of mid 2018, our card processor indicates they are not seeing sufficient demand from cardholders to schedule the development effort, but they continue to monitor.
Re inappropriate post to blog: I torched the troll/spam comments. For some reason, I had stopped getting immediate alerts on comments, so troll/spam comments were lingering. Just cleaned those up. Apologies.
Are there any security or anti-fraud measures you use to protect users?
Yes - please see: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#pii-safe
Also, anti-fraud pattern detection tools are constantly being evolved at all three system layers - FamZoo, our card processor (TransCard), and MasterCard.
My son received some cash for his birthday. How can he add/deposit the cash to his card?
I find it easiest to just act as the family ATM by collecting the cash myself and crediting the child's FamZoo card the corresponding amount. You can also load cash on a card at a participating retailer, but they'll typically charge around $4. See the MasterCard rePower, Reload @ the Register, and MoneyPak entries here: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#loading
Is there a way to set up a Direct Deposit to automatically split on a child's card? In otherwords, if a child gets a direct deposit for $100, and we have a 50/50 split, can 50 go on the spending card, and 50 go into the savings automatically?
If a Green Dot Money Pak is purchased and given to my child as a gift, can he load the money onto his card directly or do the funds have to be loaded to the parent account to disburse to child?
Technically, the recipient of the MoneyPak must be 18 years of age to retrieve the funds according to GreenDot's requirements posted here: https://www.moneypak.com/requirements So, loading the MoneyPak onto the parent card, and then transferring the funds within FamZoo is the safest route.
What happens if my child attempts to make a purchase with a prepaid card and there aren't enough funds? Will the transaction simply decline? Are there any type of fees for a declined transaction?
Yes, a purchase attempt made when there are not sufficient funds on the FamZoo card will just harmlessly decline, and there is never a fee assessed - even when it's an automatic recurring charge (like, say, Spotify) which is a fee loophole with a normal bank debit card - see: http://www.familyfinancefavs.com/2016/09/warn-teens-auto-billing-overdraft-debit-cards.html
Can this card be used in Europe?
You'll find info and caveats about using the cards outside the US here:
http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#outside-us
My daughter attempted to make 2 purchases out of town and one in town with sufficient funds, but it has declined everytime. Can you explain as to why?
Detailed decline reasons can be found right in the FamZoo app(lication) - please see: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#declined
Would love to see a way to duplicate checklists.
I know there is a routing number, etc. on the back of the card in TINY print that lets the outside world see the "card" as a checking account. Is there a way to print a document within the program to give to employers for direct deposit or to Social Security for children who receive SSDI?
Yes, contact us by emailing service@famzoo.com or clicking on CONTACT US and we can give you a PDF direct deposit form to print out. Let us know the last 4 digits of the desired card.
If I activated all three cards (two are my "underage" kids) is it the same pin for all 3 cards? It doesn't seem to allow individual pins to be updated.
I realize this is a pre-paid card, but with the MasterCard logo, is there any reporting to credit bureaus?
Each card has its own default PIN:
http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#default-pin
PINs can be updated as follows:
http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#update-pin
Using FamZoo cards does not result in any reporting to credit bureaus and does not affect your credit history or score:
http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#credit-history
What financial institution holds the money in the master account? Does the account earn any interest?
Our accounts are FDIC insured and (as of 8/9/2019) reside at Four Corners Community Bank. The accounts do not earn interest.
Can kids themselves add money? Specifically, I want to earn commissions on my art but I don't know how to transfer funds from outside apps (Like Paypal and Venmo) into my account.
If you have a PayPal account, you can link your FamZoo card as a bank account using the card's routing and account numbers. Then you can transfer funds from your PayPal wallet to your linked FamZoo card account. See: http://blog.famzoo.com/2017/09/how-to-use-your-prepaid-card-with-paypal.html
Is it possible for a child send a transfer from their card to the parent funding card via their iphone app?
It is possible for a child to request such a transfer if the "Allow Money Requests Between Family Members" option has been set to YES in the family settings by the parent.
Does it work with zelle or any work arounds?
Currently, our cards do not work with Zelle, but you can use ACH transfers or PopMoney or any of the other reload options listed here: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/load.html
Yesterday my daughter did some extra chores, like washing all the dinner dishes and cleaning up the kitchen, all on her own, which was impressive. We told her she could request some money for it for the initiative, and she created a Request for Money for $2, which we approved. Today she did them again, and we said ok, but $0.50 because it's not all about the money, but wanted to recognize her continued effort and good deed in a small way. The question is, can she put in a Request for Money again? We do not see it on the Mobile App. On the screen she did it yesterday, is now only says Request History - showing yesterdays request, but no link to request again. When will that reappear? Is there a weekly limit? I couldn't find anything in the FAQs Thanks.
The Request Money icon (right pointing arrow) is always available in the child's view on the Accounts listing page - just to the left of the account name. So, requests can be launched from there any time and repeatedly. (When parents sign in, they see the +/- icons to the left of each account instead.)
I don't like that money moved from a child's spending account to the same child's savings (IOU) account is moved back to the parent donor card. I get that the money is held on that card, but it shows the amount twice, once in the child's IOU, and then again added to the main funding card. This is confusing because now there is more money on the funding card than actually available. Plus the amount is listed in the child's IOU as a positive. Thus, creating two positive amounts of the same monies. Is there a better way to do this that I am not realizing? Can a saving or charity account not be an IOU account so the money stays on their own card?
Yes, you can make your saving and charity accounts be prepaid card accounts instead of IOU accounts so that they hold the actual dollars. (A physical card comes with every prepaid account, but most parents just keep the additional cards in their desk drawer so the kids aren't wandering around with them.) To add the cards, see: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#more-cards
How to add fund to my card ?
Please see: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#how-load
Is there any update on Apple Pay availability since the answer above from 2018?
Yes, our cards support Apple Pay as of end Oct 2020: https://blog.famzoo.com/2020/12/the-chips-ship-plus-apple-pay-google.html
Is it possible to subscribe if we are in Canada ?
Thank you
any update on an API? I keep forgeting to check off my tasks, and, would like to be able to build a button panel app for my computer to be able to check them off there? the phone thing, works. but, not super good
No particular update on providing an API - just has not bubbled to the top of the priority list yet given the relative lack of demand...
Hello I live in Europe but I have a son studying in Florida is there any way I can apply to get a card for his spenses while he is studying in USA?
Apologies, but no. The registering parent and all the cardholders in the family must meet these requirements:
http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#cardholder-reqs
This is a two part question. I've tried to debit my childs Savings account in order to move it to their Spending account. However, every time I've tried to "withdraw" the amount, it has not flowed back to the primary funding card. It's just gone. Where do the debited funds go to if not to the primary funding card, and how can I move money from a childs Savings to their Spending?
It sounds like the Savings account is an IOU account instead of a prepaid card account - check to see if it has "[IOU]" after its name in the Accounts listing. If so, please see this article:
https://blog.famzoo.com/2020/08/prepaid-card-vs-iou-accounts.html
and these FAQ links:
https://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-faqs.html#iou-accounts
https://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#transfer-iou-prepaid
Any plans to prioritize API
Hi Rob, No current plans for publishing an API.
Open to Canadians?
Our IOU accounts can be used anywhere (http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-faqs.html#iou-accounts) but our prepaid cards - which is what most families use - can only be issued to US residents (https://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-faqs.html#prepaid-accounts).
Correction to my November 19, 2017 comment: as of our switch to SouthState Bank on October 29, 2019, our cards no longer belong to a free ATM network.
Tried downloading app from Google Play but says it was built for an older version. Will there be an updated app soon?
We'll have our Android App updated within the next week or two. In the interim, you can pull up a mobile browser (like Chrome) and sign in from FamZoo.com and get the same mobile screens.
If you use Chrome, they can add a bookmark to your home screen by selecting the menu in the upper right (three dots) and selecting "Add to Home screen".
Hi there - Any word on the app update?
We are testing an updated version right now. Hit the Contact Us link in FamZoo to be added as a tester if you're interested in helping us validate the new version.
how do i apply a credit to the iou?
If it is a standalone IOU Account, you select the plus icon next to the account and enter a credit transaction. If it is a card IOU, you can manipulate the card IOU balance directly by going to the Transactions page for the card account in the Desktop UI, clicking on the card IOU balance (beneath the large card balance in the upper right) and credit the card IOU balance directly. If you need to reset a card IOU, see: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#cancel-iou
I apologize if this question has been asked previously. Is there a way to dispute a charge on my child's card? I have contacted the merchant and they are not issuing a refund for a mistaken charge that they made. They are only offering in-store credit.
You can dispute an *unauthorized* charge (card physically stolen or compromised in a data breach), but disputes with merchants to whom you have supplied the card information need to be addressed to the merchant as per our cardholder agreement.
If my kid has two cards one is for spending and the other is for Saving. Can my kid transfer the amount he wants to save onto his saving account card from his spending account himself? Or would I have to transfer the money for him through my account app.?? AAlso my kids mother and I are seperated.. Is there a way she can add money to my kids account without her having my account info?
Not 100% independently, but your child can initiate a Transfer Request that must be approved by a parent - a notification is sent to the parent who can click/tap on the embedded link to approve, partially approve, or deny. You child's mother can load the child's card directly using one of the reload options.
Hey my name is Percy Bradley and i need help im only 14 and trying to set up my own banking account on famzoo
Hi Percy, our family accounts must be set up by a parent or guardian as the registering member.
Is a PIN required to use the card?
Short answer: sometimes. Long answer: your FamZoo card can be run as either CREDIT or DEBIT in a store. If you choose CREDIT, you may be asked for a signature. If you choose DEBIT, you may be asked for a PIN. I say "may", because that's up to the merchant and how they configure their Point of Sale device. They can choose to let transactions go through without signature/PIN below a certain threshold for consumer convenience.
Can I allow my kid move money between his accounts without my approval? For context, my son prefers keeping most of his money on the savings account, and periodically transfer some to the spending as needed. This should help him spend money in a more controllable way. Currently to use his own money he needs to ask permission every time, which is weird.
Note the workaround for child initiated transfers at the bottom of this FAQ entry: http://blog.famzoo.com/p/famzoo-card-faqs.html#kid-transfer
Thanks for reply Bill! Thanks for the workaround, but it doesn't seems like it very convenient solution. Checklist item may be triggered only once a day. What if he needs to do several transfers? I can probably create several items. Eg. $10, $20, $50, and it will be multiplied by 2 as I need 3 for savings -> spending and 3 for spending to savings. And it still wouldn't cover all the cases. Did you consider to add an option to allow kid make transfers between their own accounts?
We have it on our wish list, but, frankly, it has rarely been requested in the last 10+ years, so other feature requests have taken precedence. I'll +1 it for you to raise the priority. Yes, you can have multiple daily repeating entries (as many as you want) for different amounts/directions - kinda like an ATM machine. Be sure to set the Expires setting to one day so the list doesn't get cluttered over time.
Nearly 6 years later from the last time this was asked - can the cards owrk withe ApplePay or are there any plans for that to occur. In 2018 I understand, but in 2024 kids are using that feature much more.
Yes, we launched Apple Pay support with our chip based cards in 2020 - see https://blog.famzoo.com/2020/12/the-chips-ship-plus-apple-pay-google.html If you are having trouble adding your FamZoo card to Apple Pay, be sure to contact us.
does the Fam Zoo interface work with Zelle?
We do not generally support Zelle as a reload option. Zelle doesn't allow you to link more than one bank account to a Zelle profile:
https://www.zellepay.com/support/can-i-connect-more-than-one-bank-account-my-zelle-profile So, if your Zelle profile is linked with your current bank, you won't be able to send money to yourself over at your FamZoo account at SouthState without somehow creating a separate profile unlinked to any other bank.
Hi! Any update on allowing kids make transfers between their own accounts? That trick with checklist doesn't seem like a good solution. E.g. it allows kids infinitely borrow money - the balance becomes negative.
Our preference is for families to use transfer requests when real money is involved. It's just safer and more transparent all around. Most families don't mind the few taps it takes to approve requests.
