You have one Dining Out budget for the family, but several family members buying meals. How do you make sure everyone’s purchases come out of the same pool of funds?
Earlier this year, I described how to manage a shared family budget with FamZoo: put the budgeted funds on a dedicated card, transfer money to each family member’s spending card before a purchase, and return any excess afterward.
That approach still works. But digital wallets offer a convenient — and highly secure — shortcut.
Add the same shared budget card to each participating family member’s digital wallet. Then select that card before paying.
No transfers back and forth. Each purchase draws directly from the same shared balance.
I tested this with my own FamZoo card: I added it to Google Wallet on my Android phone and to Apple Wallet on my wife’s iPhone. Same card. Two phones ready to tap to pay. One budget.
Here’s how to put that approach to work for your family.
Set up the shared budget
Order a separate FamZoo card under a parent family member for a category like Dining Out.
-
Load it with the amount your family plans to spend during the month — or whatever budgeting cycle fits your household.
If desired, set up a recurring allowance to automate transferring the budgeted amount from your primary funding card.
Add the card to the digital wallet on each participating family member’s device.
The physical card can stay with its cardholder or in a safe place. The digital wallet on each device provides access to the shared funds when paying.
Pick the right card before paying
At checkout, open your wallet, select the Dining Out card, and tap to pay.
Your lunch and your family member’s morning coffee now come out of the same dining budget. Both purchases appear in the FamZoo transaction history for that card.
You can use the same idea for other shared categories: groceries, family outings, or vacation spending.
With multiple FamZoo cards in a wallet, choosing the right one matters. Give each card a clear budget nickname wherever your wallet supports it. Google Wallet lets you assign names like “Family Dining” or “Vacation Spending.” Use nicknames that match the editable account names you assigned to the cards in FamZoo. If your wallet doesn’t offer nicknames, match the card’s last four digits to the account names on the Accounts screen in the FamZoo app.
Record who bought what
Sharing a card brings everyone’s purchases into one transaction history. To keep track of who made each purchase, use FamZoo’s editable transaction memos.
Add a note like “Purchased by: Jane” or “John: lunch after practice.”
Those notes give your family useful context when reviewing where the budget went.
Keep the transfer approach as a backup
What if a restaurant doesn’t accept tap to pay?
Use the approach from the earlier article: transfer enough from the shared budget card to the purchasing family member’s separate spending card, pay with that card, and return any excess after the final amount settles.
Digital wallets simplify purchases wherever they’re accepted. The transfer approach fills the gaps.
Make security part of the habit
Paying with a digital wallet is also a good security practice.
Apple Pay and Google Wallet use a substitute card number for payments, helping keep your actual card number hidden from the merchant. Apple Pay also uses a unique transaction security code, and the wallets use device authentication to help protect payments. These protections make digital-wallet tap to pay one of the most secure ways to pay in person.
Get started
Start with one shared category your family wants to keep under control. Fund the card, add it to your wallets, and make selecting the right budget card part of your checkout routine.
Sharing your family budget in FamZoo is just a tap away.
